History of UNtunjambili Parish

UNtunjambili Parish was established in 1874 by Bishop Hans Schreuder who was a Norwegian Missionary. In 1924 Schrueder’s mission was taken over by the Americans.

After the death of Bishop Hans Schreuder there came Revd. N. Astrup who in 1902 was consecrated into the office of the Bishop. In 1919 Bishop N. Astrup passed away after 36 years of service. His father Revd. H.J. Astrup acted for some time.

He was succeeded by his son Revd. Johannes Astrup. Another missionary from the American Lutheran Mission who served for 32 years was Revd. H. Otte.

UNtunjambili Mission consisted of:

  • UNtunjambili Mission Church (Isiqu)
  • UNtunjambili Mission Hospital
  • UNtunjambili Mission School (Ekukhanyeni)

Other congregations under UNtunjambili Parish which were headed by the Evangelists were:

  • Ekuthandazeni
  • Bethesda
  • Endandathweni (which is now under UThukela Parish)
  • Ekwethembeni
  • Edambe (which is now under Makhabeleni Parish)
  • Evuleka
  • Hhalambu (which is now under Eshowe Circuit)

**Ekuthandazeni congregation was also headed by an ordained pastor who was under probation**

  • Khumbulani (headed by an ordained self-supporting pastor Revd. T.T. Jali)
  • Vuleka (headed by an ordained self-supporting pastor Revd. O.N.F. Danisa)
  • Ekuthuleni
  • Ekuthandazeni
  • Bethesda (headed by an ordained self-supporting pastor Revd. C.S. Msomi)
  • Ekukhanyeni
  • Ekwethembeni
  • Enkazimulweni
